In the fall of 1981, Plano East Senior High School was opened with 563 juniors. At present, the approximate enrollment at Plano East is 3,060 juniors and seniors. Plano East has a long history of academic excellence and provides innovative programs that meet the needs of a diverse population. Over 250 courses are offered to students at Plano East Senior High, allowing students to design a program which specifically meets their unique talents and needs as individuals. 

One such program is the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. The International Baccalaureate Programme is a rigorous course of study designed to meet the needs of highly motivated secondary students. Certified as an IB school in July 1995, Plano East has a programme that includes a total of approximately 450 students in the 11th-12th grade IB programme and in the 9th and 10th grade feeder school Pre-IB prep programmes. All students admitted to the Plano East IB and Pre-IB programmes are full diploma candidates. No IB certificates are offered. Plano East is the only campus in PISD that has the IB programme. Other programs Plano East offers to enrich its students' education include the second half of the Health Sciences Academy, Advanced Placement (AP) Program, automotive technology, culinary arts, medical science clinical rotations, and the Army Junior Officers' Training Corps (Army JROTC).
